AIT'S INDUSTRIAL TRANSMISSION TECHNICAL SUPPORT PAGES: CHECKING PRESSURES

Now is the time to get out the gauges and check forward and reverse clutch pack pressure, main line pressure and converter outlet cooler pressure.

Check the gauges and hoses periodically. You will want to insure an accurate pressure reading. Also, be sure to use the correct capacity gauge.

Most older forklifts had all the aforementioned pressure taps. They would be placed in the control valve, or clearly marked on the housing. Nowadays, forklifts often are equipped only with a clutch pressure tap in the control valve. This makes diagnosis a bit more difficult. If there are no markings to guide you, look for a pipe plug or a 1/8" plug. This is usually the correct place to take a clutch pressure reading.

If your transmission is equipped with a main line pressure tap, get a reading while the forklift is in forward, then a reading while in reverse. When the pressure is low in both directions, the pump may be the culprit. If low in one direction, only one range of the clutch pack may have failed.

Before beginning your pressure check, you must get the
drive wheel(s) off the floor. Remember, safety first.
